For my future reference , can a long tailshaft RWD Cadillac TH400 be changed to a short tailshaft ? What is involved in the conversion ?

Yes, but I believe it requires a complete dumping of the "guts" to do it.

JM is correct, since the output shaft goes in first [along with trust washer]. Not that tough to do, if you aren't doing a full rebuild. End play should be checked, but it'd probably be fine.
The Ron Sessions TH400 book woul explain what's involved.
Kinda silly not to get a $100 and something kit and freshen it while it's apart though.

The Ron Sessions TH400 book woul explain what's involved. I've been trying to buy that book lately and haven't found it for less than about $200. Apparently it is out of print but still in demand.

I've ordered the book online from several places and so far each accepts the order, then cancels a few days later. If you have a copy of that book treat it like gold! I'm still looking for a reasonable buy on one.

Actually, I don't see anything about long/short tails in the Ron Sessions book. The factory service manual for about any '68 up GM big block will cover the trans just fine. It is just assembled with a different output shaft & outer cover. Note if your current setup has an O ring yoke or not. Any trans over couple decades old needs all new seals (ESP the clutch pistons) to be reliable, regardless of mileage.
If Ron Sessions goes any higher, mine will be for sale. Somebody should do a CD. Bruce Roe

I've got a number of these trans including one 4x4 version and a TH475 with tail shaft brake. At some point I'd like the TH475 parts in a Cadillac case with the tail shaft brake if that is possible.
2-Cadillac long shaft 1-Buick short shaft (BOPC NOT an SP) 1-Chevy 4x4 1-Chevy TH475
The newest one would be the Chevy 4x4 which is an '89. The others are 70's or earlier.
I can imagine converting the second Cadillac trans to adapt to a transfer case, though that project is further away from proceeding.
I have the factory service manual for the '89 so maybe I don't need another book.

The factory manual for the '76 DeVille I had has a very good chapter on the TH400.

I might have the '76 Service Manual but won't be able to check my shop for another couple of months. Kind of a bummer but I'm barred from home until July for medical reasons.
I know I have an '89 Chevy pickup manual and my '89 K3500 has a TH400 so it should have that chapter.... Its likely I have what I need except I'd like to know the gotchas when changing shaft lengths and making other mods, and that is what I was hoping to find in the Sessions book.

If one isn't going to freshen the trans [clutches, drum seals etc], only normal hand tools are required, and the only issue with changing tail shafts and extension housings would be checking the tail shaft end play. [dial indicator for that]
