Here is an interesting discussion on maintaining the column shifter & making it work for you.

3960 lb '71 C-10. 11.7-1 CR 514". PEP I beam rods floating MTS 18cc dish Probes, Elgin solid cam, home ported heads, MTS 2.19/1.84", Potter/Probe shaft rockers, edel 2115, 4781 850. Switch-pitch TH400, 12" 1800/3200 Tri-Shield convertor, 4.30 gears. Best so far of 11.66, 114.8 mph and 1.59 sixty

Sorry Dave, that doesnt work with a POS 1962 Impala wagon- modified 283 / stock cast iron powerglide like in my 2nd car, its  more like this:

1) Put in Low

2) Shift into High at 7200 rpm Grin

3) Watch the guy in the new 77 Trans Am search for gears as he cant pull ahead of you in a rolling race ( with 2 of your friends  with you laughing) Grin

I assume that it could. As in, I assume that the glide has a govorner that could be modified to shift at the desired rpm.

Could hold it in low as long as I wanted..........Factory untouched trans.  Not any speed /trans parts for a cast iron glide back then or ever I imagine.
