Due to a huge influx of spammer scum. Instant self registration has been disabled for the common Free-Mail accounts like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

Self registration is still available to anyone who doesn't mind using their subscriber e-mail address. Once you have registered, you are welcome to change your e-mail address to whatever address that you would like to use.

If you would like to register with only a Free-Mail address. Please send an e-mail to: John @ Caddy500 dot Com. Please include the user-name & the e-mail address that you would like to use. I will gladly register your account & provide you with a temporary password.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. It's always the actions of just a few, that make things difficult for the decent people.

Thank you

Why not enable the "visual verification" (or set it to a higher setting)?

Next enable "member activation" or "Member approval".
The first sends an email to verify the user and email address are real and what to join.
The latter means you (the admin) gets a message to approve the user.

I think the high setting for "visual verification" and the activation mail will catch most spammers.

I had taken those actions except for the admin approval setting. Over the last couple of months this board has been hammered by hundreds (possibly over a thousand) new member registrations. I have a partial ban in place preventing anyone with a Hotmail, Yahoo or G-mail account from being able to self register. The G-mail ban blocked over 300 attempts. I also started a new ban on any accounts that end in '.ru' that blocked 280-something, last I looked.

I'm guessing that Russia has just recently been exposed to the idea of spamming. About 85 to 90+% are from Russia with the rest being from China or Amsterdam. It has been at the least, a twice daily PITA, checking the membership & deleting these BS accounts. Usually they are easy to spot, but some often look legitimate. I'm sure there are a few that I haven't deleted yet that need it, but I can't tell 100%.

I still don't understand what they think they will accomplish.  Huh?  Do they actually think they will sell some fake Viagra or some other BS product, by plastering links on a forum?  Especially a relatively small interest group like this forum.

I will try the admin approval setting & see how that works for now.

Thanks

They have no idea how big or busy the site is, no do they care. It's all automated on their end, even the search for sites.
It just goes looking for forums, and registers, then posts to ever thread on the site.
They get paid for every click, accidental or on purpose (or they infect the user's machine).
If only 0.01% of the posts get clicked, and they post 1,000,000 times, that's still 1,000 clicks they get paid for.

The bots can easily post 100 million time in hours.

If nothing else it keeps them from posting while consolidating your work.
A simple daily (or every other day) check of the queue.

The flurry generally goes in waves. So it'll be real active for a few weeks, then quiet for a while.

Ahh, the joys of being a webmaster today Cheesy

I was able to self register with a hotmail account; all I had to do was go back to it and click the verify link.

Well... The Circus is back in town again.  Angry

I have made a few changes in the boards settings. Hopefully it won't affect any of you guys that are already established. If by chance you run into any problems... Please don't take it personally. I assure you it was a mistake.

Just let me know by PM if you are able to, or send me an e-mail at: JOHNatCADDY500dotCOM
Please let me know what happened & I will fix it immediately upon receiving notification.

Thanks

Recently I sent out a newsletter to the membership that explained the spammer & self registration issue. A copy of the newsletter has been included below.

It has been a while since I have sent out any type of a newsletter. I hope that by doing so, doesn't cause any inconvenience to anyone.

I wanted to let you all know, that the board has been receiving "Spam Attacks" nightly which has forced me to place a higher level of restriction on the new membership self registration feature. I have also replaced the block on new membership self registration with any of the free-mail accounts such as Hotmail, Yahoo-Mail & G-Mail. (For some reason, G-mail is the spammers free-mail of choice.)

Now here is the important thing that I want you all to please understand. I value privacy very highly! I don't like to use my subscriber e-mail, instead of my Hotmail, any more than is necessary. The block that is in place against the free-mail accounts is ONLY TO PREVENT INSTANT SELF REGISTRATION BY A NEW MEMBER. It does not prevent anyone from switching back to & using the free-mail account of your choice after you have registered.

Of course if someone would prefer... They are welcome to send an e-mail to: John at Caddy500 dot Com with the user-name & free-mail address that you would like to use & I will happily register your new membership myself. Please DO NOT send me the password that you would like to use. I will provide a simple temporary password for you & then you can change it to your top secret, personal password.  Grin

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause anyone. It should not affect anyone who is already a member. That is what this e-mail is mostly for. If anyone experiences any problems, please let me know right away so I can fix it for you.

I hope all is well with everyone out there on your end & that you are all enjoying a wonderful Spring/Summer season. It has eluded us on this part of the world so far & it is still raining outside.  Angry  Cheesy

Thanks & good luck to you on your projects.

Wish it was that easy. I just visited down near the San Diego area. They are suffering bad for lack of water. All the plants & grass are dying... Meanwhile I stand by & watch, as literally tens of thousands of gallons of water, come off my roof & just go down the drain. The local folks can't figure out what their #1 resource is, whether it's lumber, salmon, pot, whatever.

HELLO... Boys & Girls!!! It's called WATER! That's right, simple H2O. There wouldn't be any salmon, lumber, etc, without the aqua.

Now I know there are a couple of... maybe, 3-4 mountains in the way. After that though, it's pretty much all down hill. I doubt the tree-huggers would ever let a pipe-line be set up with a storage lake at each end, though.

Sorry Doug... Looks like all I can do, is to offer you a drink, if your ever out this way.  Cheesy

Well the Spammer Scum are at it again. I have disabled the self registration feature for the time being.

Please send an e-mail to "John at CADDY500 dot com" to register & I will gladly sign you up. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. It's always the actions of a few that ruin something for everyone else.

Thanks
